Making a small smoothing plane – Jude Kenny
https://judekenny.wordpress.com/2015/06/26/making-a-small-smoothing-plane
A place to share my projects. Making a small smoothing plane. Date: June 26, 2015. The third plane in this series is a small smoothing plane. This I made to abate my hankering for a Stanley No. 1 plane or a No. 2, pocket-sized planes that are hard to come by. I knew I’d be building on the last two projects and making up the plane with glued-up parts. This one though, would have a rear tote, or handle, or at least somewhere to rest the palm of the hand. I made up a wedge from a piece of oak and clamped it...

Making a bench stool – Jude Kenny
https://judekenny.wordpress.com/2015/07/08/making-a-bench-stool
A place to share my projects. Making a bench stool. Date: July 8, 2015. The next project I wanted to tackle is a bench stool. This is for practice for ultimately making a chair and also just to have a stool in the workshop. The basis for the design is one by Paul Sellers on his Masterclasses site:. This features a carved seat, four splayed legs with upper and lower stretchers. All four sides are equal and the stretchers have arch details. The pieces were each put into the vice and the sides planed smooth...

Workbench – chisel rack – Jude Kenny
https://judekenny.wordpress.com/2015/06/09/workbench-chisel-rack
A place to share my projects. Workbench – chisel rack. Date: June 9, 2015. With the workbench pretty much finished, I decided to add a chisel rack. I had made a toolwell for the bench, but didn’t like the way sharp chisels could lie there waiting to give me a nick. The toolwell on Bob Lang’s bench is made of removable boxes and I might get there someday. Anyways, I figured a chisel rack would be handy. So, I found two small strips of wood. I took the rack out after gluing up overnight. You are commenting...

Workbench – shelf – Jude Kenny
https://judekenny.wordpress.com/2015/06/09/workbench-shelf
A place to share my projects. Workbench – shelf. Date: June 9, 2015. The last thing I have done on my workbench is to give it a shelf. I like to keep odds and ends on a shelf under the bench top. It isn’t for storing tools, just bench hooks and the like. The battens were raised and lowered until the top of the slats lined up with the top of the side stretchers on the leg frames, which are about an inch lower than the front and back stretchers. Radius bottom plane V2 – Jude Kenny
https://judekenny.wordpress.com/2015/06/25/radius-bottom-plane-v2
A place to share my projects. Radius bottom plane V2. Date: June 25, 2015. I made another radius bottom plane. This one was to be a small smoothing plane but I didn’t like how things were going so I curved the bottom; kind of like making an egg souffle and then deciding that, since it wasn’t working, an omelet would be nice. Also, I used some O1 steel I got from a supply house and heat treated the steel. Starting out, I chose some Jatoba for the bed and toe of the plane and some maple for the sides.

Making a radius bottom plane – Jude Kenny
https://judekenny.wordpress.com/2015/06/23/making-a-radius-bottom-plane
A place to share my projects. Making a radius bottom plane. Date: June 23, 2015. I follow Paul Sellers’ online woodworking class and wanted to make the bench stool project. One aspect of the design is a carved seat that is made using a gouge and a radius-bottom plane. The plane is itself a project on the class, so I set about making one. The plane is made from a couple of scrap blanks of oak and pine I had laying around. The blade is from a block plane I don’t like. His takes on the form of a plane. ...

Paul Sellers has been instrumental to me if getting back to the basics of woodworking with a focus on showing what can be done with a minimal set of tools. His YouTube videos are very enlightening and his blog is a font of information. AX84 is a website dedicated to DIY guitar amplifier projects. Workbench – flatten & finish – Jude Kenny
https://judekenny.wordpress.com/2015/06/09/workbench-flatten-finish
A place to share my projects. Workbench – flatten & finish. Date: June 9, 2015. With the tops done and vises fitted, I screwed the top onto the leg frames using lag bolts. Wedges were cut for the stretchers and hammered home. I then hauled out the old workbench and brought the new one to its new home. Then I took off the rear bench top and set about planing the front section flat. The back section was screwed back on again and then was matched to the front by running a straight edge from one to the other.
