Neophyte crosses the Pacific

Neophyte crosses the Pacific. Thursday, October 25, 2007. Day 231 The final day. Opua, New Zealand. We are here, over 7 months and 8000 nautical miles from when we started - a third of the way around the world. I started the blog to let my family and friends know where I was and to provide a chronicle of the journey. Now that journey is concluded and so will my daily entries into the blog. Would I recommend the trip to others? Under the right circumstances – yes. Would I own my own boat? Hiva Oa, Fatu Hi...

Neophyte crosses the Pacific: Day 216 Vuda to Denerau

http://www.carpediemnow-iceman.blogspot.com/2007/10/day-216-vuda-to-denerau.html

Neophyte crosses the Pacific. Wednesday, October 10, 2007. Day 216 Vuda to Denerau. Because of the recommendations of several other yachties, we decide not to paint the bottom of Southern Star here in Fiji. Because of the heat, we decide to move back to Denerau where there is a breeze and more to do in the marina and environs. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Links to other blogs of the trip. Mark's blog of the trip. Check out my pictures of the trip. Day 231 The final day. Day 229 A bit of wind.

Neophyte crosses the Pacific: Day 217 Provisioning

http://www.carpediemnow-iceman.blogspot.com/2007/10/day-217-provisioning.html

Neophyte crosses the Pacific. Thursday, October 11, 2007. In the morning we do another wash down of Southern Star so she is clean and ready to sail. Mark and I grab a taxi to Nadi to do the last provisioning at the open-air victuals market, the meat market and at the supermarket. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Links to other blogs of the trip. Mark's blog of the trip. Check out my pictures of the trip. Day 231 The final day. Day 230 Arriving at our ultimate destination. Day 229 A bit of wind.

Neophyte crosses the Pacific: Day 225 Moderate Gale

http://www.carpediemnow-iceman.blogspot.com/2007/10/day-225-moderate-gale.html

Neophyte crosses the Pacific. Friday, October 19, 2007. Day 225 Moderate Gale. Our position at 0800 is S26º59 X E171º38. We cannot deploy the jib in these winds so we sail with a double-reefed main and the staysail. In this configuration, we only proceed at about 2 knots and must head S/SW with the wind 60º off the bow. With the engine assisting, the speed goes up to 4 knots and we can head a bit more southward but the bumpiness increases markedly. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Day 231 The final day.

Neophyte crosses the Pacific: Day 215 Still in Vuda

http://www.carpediemnow-iceman.blogspot.com/2007/10/day-215-still-in-vuda.html

Neophyte crosses the Pacific. Tuesday, October 9, 2007. Day 215 Still in Vuda. Not only is Vuda Point Marina isolated it is also very hot. The good news is that is protected from the wind. It there were a gale we would be safe. The bad news is it is protected from the wind. When the sky is clear and the weather hot, the boat deck is so hot it is difficult to walk on it barefoot. We wait for the quote to repaint Southern Star and watch the weather GRIB files. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Neophyte crosses the Pacific: Day 222 Bumpy ride

http://www.carpediemnow-iceman.blogspot.com/2007/10/day-222-bumpy-ride.html

Neophyte crosses the Pacific. Tuesday, October 16, 2007. Day 222 Bumpy ride. Position @ 0730 is S22º45 X E175º00. The sky is very clear and the barometer is very high at 1020 hPa (hecto pascals – the unit of barometric pressure for a meteorologist). The sun is out but it is definitely getting colder. Every now and then, Southern Star plows into a wave and spray comes over the boat and into the cockpit. It is clear that the water is colder as well. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Day 231 The final day.

Captain Mark's Blog: November 2006

http://ss-captain.blogspot.com/2006_11_01_archive.html

Wednesday, November 22, 2006. Stress in La Paz. The past few days have been the most stressful for Molly and I since we left San Francisco. We departed from Los Muertos at 2:00am and after 2 hours of motor sailing under a clear windless sky we suffered a major accident. Then Nelson from Stormcat volunteered his services. He believed we could pull the remnants of the old prop off while the boat was still in the water (phew! Happy Thanks Giving Everyone. Posted by Captain Mark at 3:54 PM. We are planning a...

The people here are bundled for winter and we’re in T-shirts and shorts. The weather is great (and it's only going to get warmer). Talking SH#$ %T to Authority. Posted by Captain Mark at 3:48 PM. Running on a broad reach so boat is swaying againmakes for a nasty on board experience. Yesterday was equator day but wind had spiked up to 20-25 and so had the seas so we spent most of the day sailing hard on the wind to make as much southing as possible. Monday, May 28, 2007. 16 42 732 S / 151 02 1361 W. 6:00am May 28, 2007. The surf at Haapiti was excellent. Kurt and I went surfing on our last day there at 5:00am. We literally entered the water with all the stars out and a very faint glow on the eastern horizon. We had the place to ourselves for almost 2hours. The swell was a good 2 feet overhead and super clean. We even have pictures to prove it. We expect to be here for a day or two and the then head for Raiatea. Posted by Captain Mark at 2:21 PM.

Captain Mark's Blog: February 2007

http://ss-captain.blogspot.com/2007_02_01_archive.html

Wednesday, February 14, 2007. Decided at the last minute to join Pat and Dave on No Regrets as crew on a quick jog / surf trip down the coast. We left PV at midnight and motor sailed up to Punta de Mita. We anchored shortly after 3am and crashed below. Sun up brought clammy weather and zero surf. Oh well - up came the anchor and we motor sailed out south west across the Banderas Bay. Posted by Captain Mark at 10:45 AM. Friday, February 02, 2007. Refit in Puerto Vallarta. Tuesday, April 17, 2007. Anahoa Bay, Nuka Hiva. 10:00am Apr 18, 2007. On the 35mi trip up from Fatu Hiva we saw some birds diving on the water. We took aim at the flock with 2 lines in the water and Bang - two fish on. The first once got away but the meat hook (our trusty back-up) served us up a delicious 30 lb tuna. Kurt carved up the fish and 2 hours later we enjoyed another delicious sushi lunch. We plan to leave tomorrow for Ua Pou. Posted by Captain Mark at 1:25 PM. Tuesday, April 10, 2007. So back ...
