Cycling the World for Birds

Cycling the World for Birds. Thursday, August 13, 2015. There was no place to hang a hammock in the rundown building, while most of the floor space was already consumed by the large tent they had pitched inside it. No problem, if you can’t beat them, join them! And so I was invited to share the tent for the night. That night it rained, and so did the roof. Franco moved quickly to get the flysheet over the tent, which saved us from the worst that the downpour had to offer. With Nico and Franco. Also known...

Cycling the World for Birds: April 2014

http://www.cyclingtheworldforbirds.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html

Cycling the World for Birds. Thursday, April 24, 2014. A month in Mumbai. I caught my first flight, since starting my journey in July 2012, from Dubai to Mumbai. The plan was to cycle through southern India before moving on to Southeast Asia. A self-inflicted injury to my hand would ensure that my plans to cycle India would be stalled be some weeks. My first impression of the traffic in Mumbai suggested it would not be a good idea to attempt cycling with one hand! The view from The Gateway of India.

Cycling the World for Birds: May 2014

http://www.cyclingtheworldforbirds.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html

Cycling the World for Birds. Tuesday, May 20, 2014. Down the Western Ghats. On the way south after leaving Mumbai. Occasionally locals would be very keen for a chat. Like in South Africa, traffic is left-sided in India so for the first time I was not cycling on the right side - it felt both strange and normal at the same time! Water Buffalo trotting down the road. A Jungle Myna, the most common myna in the Western Ghats, India. I could not resist taking this picture. A truck getting a wash down in a river.

Cycling the World for Birds: March 2015

http://www.cyclingtheworldforbirds.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

Cycling the World for Birds. Sunday, March 22, 2015. From Medina it was a short cycle to the western edge of the Llanos. I had finally arrived! It was certainly flat like it should be, but did not quite look like the version I saw from the bus window in Venezuela. Never mind, at least I am here I thought! Mind the Giant Anteaters. I unfortunately did not see one. Wall painting in Villanueava on my way to Yopal. One chance to guess who this is! One of many rivers flowing from the Andes to the Llanos plains.

Cycling the World for Birds: April 2015

Cycling the World for Birds. Sunday, April 12, 2015. Taking the detour to Mani. On arrival in Yopal I met up with Pedro and his family, who kindly hosted me for some days while I made wheel repairs to my bike – over 25 000 km had begun to take its toll on the hubs and rims. I was fortunate to share the New Year with the family, and enjoyed the festivities and Colombian traditions while bidding farewell to the Old Year. The Colombian flag flying high. Countryside along the western edge of the Llanos.

Cycling the World for Birds: How to get to Quito

http://www.cyclingtheworldforbirds.blogspot.com/2015/07/how-to-get-to-quito.html

Cycling the World for Birds. Friday, July 31, 2015. How to get to Quito. Nothing seemed too different when I crossed the border from Colombia to Ecuador. It was still green hills everywhere. Before long I reached. Ecuador uses US Dollars as its currency (it replaced the Sucre), so the biggest change for me was adjusting to the new exchange rate. I'd been stuck on Colombian Pesos for six months,. Where 2500 Pesos were the equivalent of. One Dollar. It took a couple days for it to sink in…. After my birdin...

Black Dog Bicycling: Solvitur Velocipedo

http://blackdogbicycling.blogspot.com/2015/03/solvitur-velocipedo.html

The stillness couldn't last. Altitude is a a cyclists hardest won currency; the urge for a spendthrift splurge rose irresistibly. With a glorious descent promise-note burning a hole in my pocket I packed up my camp and romped through Brinchang and Kampung Raja, the tableland's northern most stations. The scale of the developments was difficult to miss. The WWF's descri. Bing land clearance as "rampant" did not seem hyperbolic looking over valleys glaring back from reflective cellophane and glass. Instead...

Black Dog Bicycling: November 2013

http://blackdogbicycling.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html

What a gorge-ous couloir, canyon not defile it? What I may lack in pun quality I try to make up for in exuberant quantity. Having spent a comfortable pagan night camped amongst the stone sentinels my morning began with another high pass to reach. At 2260m it was only a few hundered short of Selim and constituted a hearty mornings work. But safe in the knowledge that my destination for the day, Goris, was only 25k beyond I could relax and enjoy the growing majesty of the surrounds. Back on the road again.

Big Year Norway 2014: February 2014

http://bigyearnorway.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html

Thursday, 13 February 2014. Anyway, this time, the bird was reported at a harbour in downtown Fredrikstad. Even though close to the rubbish tip, it was seen at the same place twice and happily was attracted by bread. I decided to give it a go! Starting 2 in the morning from home, ment driving all night. Advantage by driving during the night is that you save an hour because you don't need to meet all those driving in 60 km/hours (and believe me, there are lots of them! Show, I feel that the jizz ans shape...

Monday, 29 September 2014. Røst 3 - no birds for days, but then. YES, indeed - Buff-breasted sandpiper (rustsnipe) was flying back and forth overhead not really wanted to land. Big Year Norway 2014: September 2013

http://bigyearnorway.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html

Monday, 2 September 2013. I remember the very first time I came to Svalbard. It was 6th June 2001. As many of the other people visiting Svalbard, one of my biggest hope was to see the Ross’s gull. After all Svalbard is part of the Arctic, and the ross’s gull is an Arctic species. A couple of blue whales later and a few days had passed – north of Svalbard somewhere I was still smiling from the nice ross’s gull observation when I again looked out the window. Two ross’s gulls! Saturday, 1 November 2014. Is this the end? The skulky Radde's warbler (viersanger) ringed, and at the same time studied. Close up by the ten or so birders that visited the island this day. In the dark undergrowth of the forest, a single small but stunning bird trying. To hide from my Big Year list. But almost three hours seaching, ment finally that. I got a few glimpses of the charismatic Firecrest (rødtoppfuglekonge). Eirik Grønningsæter / WildNature.no. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Big Year List #1-254.

Friday, 30 January 2015. Big Year Norway Results. Hmm Yes, I should. Last weekend, I did a presentation of my Big Year for a bird club. It forced me to think back on the year and again realising all the great birding and experiences I had through the year. Despite not taking the record, I must anyway be very happy with the result. My Norwegian list increased by 18. To make 303 species in one year in Norway - you need to travel a bit. This also. This is picture show the sky above Northern Norway somewhere.

http://bigyearnorway.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html

Monday, 9 June 2014. Big Year in Svalbard. On my way to Svalbard, I had an overnight stop to tick off one the rarest breeding birds in Norway. Valdakmyra in Porsanger in the very northernmost part of Norway is the only place where Lesser white-fronted goose (dverggås) is possible to see. So on the 30. Tuesday, 29 April 2014. Tripple yankee doodle doo. Busy times indeed. Blue sky and steady easterly winds all the way from south eastern Europe to Norway made spring bird migration finally arrive! The long drive back went smooth, but uneventful bird wise. Several lapland longspur (lappspurv) were seen during a few short days. In my home area during Easter.
