Makeni, Sierra Leone. Population: 5,979,000. Life expectancy at birth 47. 76% of population lives on less than $2 per day. Primary languages: English, Krio. Economy heavily centered on mining. Four regions: Northern Province, Eastern Province, Southern Province, Western Area. Each region has directly elected local government, as well as a city council for the five major cities (including Makeni). Two major political parties: Sierra Leone People's Party and All People's Congress. Large rates of illiteracy.
