Plants and Stone for California Gardens. Laquo; Lawn to Veggies, Flagstone, and Path Fines. Louis Kahn’s Four Freedoms Park. In April we went to New York for a few days. While we were there I checked out Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park. Kahn referred to the allees of trees and the raised central lawn as a garden. Not really my idea of a garden, but the goosefoot layout of the paths is borrowed from Versailles, so I guess he’s just got a different thing in mind when he says garden. Personally, I&...

Plants and Stone for California Gardens. I also made two watercolors of the central desert, Ocotillos, Cardons, and Boojums in the boulder gardens. And I did three watercolors of the missions. One of an Elephant Tree at Mission Mulege. And two at Mission San Ignacio. 03/30/2016 Filed under sketchbook. Death Valley and the ‘super bloom’ was just one stop on the trip, we spent the bulk of our time south of the border in Baja. We revisited Cerro San Ignacio. The area also has tremendous Cardón cactus trees.

Plants and Stone for California Gardens. Archive for the ‘public gardens’ Category. Laquo; Older Entries. The Strybing Native Meadow and Stone Circle. After checking out the Drew School green wall. I went by Strybing to hang out in the native meadow. It’s one of my favorite spots in the city, and this is pretty much its best time of year. Plants and Stone for California Gardens. Laquo; Louis Kahn’s Four Freedoms Park. Basalt at the Noguchi Museum. The day after seeing Four Freedoms Park, I walked along the Hudson River from Battery Park up to the High Line. There are a number of interesting bits of stonework along that stretch of Manhattan including the fort walls at Castle Clinton. The anachronistic Irish Hunger Memorial. The park won an ASLA award. The diagonal courses of stone are meant to recall geological striations. A big slide with...

My Back 40 (Feet): July 2013

http://back40feet.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html

My Back 40 (Feet). We were up in Seattle a couple weekends ago visiting family and friends. Here are some pictures from Snoquera Falls. A fine, two-mile hike about an hour south of SeaTac. After about a 1-mile hike uphill, you reach a granitic debris field and nice waterfall. It may take a bit of discernment to maintain sight of the trail after you leave the falls area. During our visit, some of the rocks had shifted out of place and we had to do a bit of scrambling to get over them. Follow me on Twitter.

My Back 40 (Feet): Lanai

http://back40feet.blogspot.com/2014/10/lanai.html

My Back 40 (Feet). We just got back from Lana'i. Would you like to see some pictures? After this, we only have one more Hawaiian island to visit (Moloka'i) before we've seen all of the inhabited ones (unless you count Niihau, which is generally off limits. But Guy wants to go). Small and rather undeveloped, Lana'i is not a popular destination but we've had it on the to-do list for years. I woke up for the sunrise every day. It looked like this. A moonscape on the island's north. Named for the wreck of an...

My Back 40 (Feet): May 2013

http://back40feet.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html

My Back 40 (Feet). Everyday sights in Bernal Heights. A walk in San Francisco this time of year is a blessed thing. But maybe not today. Today is foggy and a little cold. I took these pictures yesterday when it was sunny. Today, staying home with your cats is a blessed thing. A little bit dissonant to totally fence off your yard from the neighborhood and put up a peace sign and Christmas lights. My sunflowers are still just seedlings compared to these. Copper canyon daisy ( Tagetes lemmonii. On the right .

My Back 40 (Feet): August 2012

http://back40feet.blogspot.com/2012_08_01_archive.html

My Back 40 (Feet). Mid-August in the back 40. I ran in to Kelly. Concert last weekend. She said Garden Blogger Spring Fling 2013 is slated for San Francisco? First I'd heard of it! Anyway, I may or may not participate in the Fling itself, but I definitely have some suggestions for gardens you should visit and maybe for accommodations too. San Francisco is expensive. I would love to meet some of you. Would you come over for dinner one night? Anyway, our chance encounter reminded me that I. I culled all th...

My Back 40 (Feet): July 2012

http://back40feet.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html

My Back 40 (Feet). I've been spending 1-2 hours per day in the garden since we got back from Hawaii. It's part of my daily routine, while applying for jobs, and working on some special math/programming projects I've been waiting for school to end to work on. Today we have fuchsia and dahlia. Big, dark (edible) berries follow the flowers on the red Fuchsia boliviana. I pruned the daylights out of Fuchsia. Miep Aalhuizen' several weeks ago. It was that or take it out. All those 'Bishops Children' dahlia tu...

All Andrew's Plants: Moving to Wordpress

Saturday, October 23, 2010. Has moved to AllAndrewsPlants.wordpress.com. You can find this post here. On my new site for the full post and to leave comments. I've already been playing around a little bit in Wordpress and the blog is set up (set to private at the moment) and it seems like a very good publishing platform that does what Blogger can only do using hacks and workarounds by default. Please consider AllAndrewsPlants on hiatus until the move is finished, it may take longer than I'd hoped! Text an...

All Andrew's Plants: June 2010

http://allandrewsplants.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html

Tuesday, June 29, 2010. New orchid - Encyclia. Has moved to AllAndrewsPlants.wordpress.com. You can find this post here. On my new site for the full post and to leave comments. I think promising myself not to buy any more succulents. Until next spring may prove. expensive. The Pseudo-bulbs are almost more colourful than the flowers! The flowers are sometimes fragrant though, and attractive in their own special way. Definitely like the form of these though and the colour is interesting. Links to this post.
