Better Days Ahead: May 2010
http://tristroutertri.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html
Not-so-deep thoughts, observations, and a dash of babbling from a marathoner, sometimes triathlete, and freelance journalist. Sunday, May 2, 2010. Boston 2010 (Part I): Mind over Matter. I was the slowest girl. Always. And it never bothered me. At all. It was the encouragement of good friends, who promised blueberry pancakes after every finish line (noticing a trend here? That kept me climbing the ladder…at a steady 10-minute-mile pace. It never occurred to me that I could run any faster than t...My life...

Better Days Ahead: December 2009

Not-so-deep thoughts, observations, and a dash of babbling from a marathoner, sometimes triathlete, and freelance journalist. Saturday, December 26, 2009. It Takes Two. Really? Dear Pottery Barn,. There are a few reasons, none of which are terribly earth shattering. It’s there, it’s beautiful, the people seem nice, and I think I can eventually make a happy life for myself for a while…or maybe forever. Who knows? Are you moving for a job? Sex and the City. OK, that’s probably a lie. I have, but ...As such...

Better Days Ahead: 10/10/10: Hot. Or Not.
http://tristroutertri.blogspot.com/2010/10/101010-hot-or-not.html
Not-so-deep thoughts, observations, and a dash of babbling from a marathoner, sometimes triathlete, and freelance journalist. Saturday, October 16, 2010. 10/10/10: Hot. Or Not. It’s sporting the kind of scrapes it hasn’t seen since the playground days, though they are camouflaged by a layer of purple bruises—because my dog turned an evening walk into a distressing game of tug-of-war, which, in my weakened state, I clearly lost. Truth be told, it’s the kind of bodily damage I had secretly always won...

Better Days Ahead: November 2009
http://tristroutertri.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html
Not-so-deep thoughts, observations, and a dash of babbling from a marathoner, sometimes triathlete, and freelance journalist. Thursday, November 12, 2009. Go West (Part IV): Pines and Peaks. When I decided I would head to Flagstaff for the Run S.M.A.R.T. Project Retreat. I didn’t know anybody else who had committed to it—a departure for somebody who has spent a decade worth of summers on vacation with 20 best college friends. Will I be too slow? What if nobody wants to run with me? Into a painful state a...

Better Days Ahead: March 2010
http://tristroutertri.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html
Not-so-deep thoughts, observations, and a dash of babbling from a marathoner, sometimes triathlete, and freelance journalist. Monday, March 1, 2010. I had my running gear on late last Sunday morning, but there I sat in my family room staring out the window at what is an all-too familiar scene in Flagstaff. Snow. Wind. Cold. And a hill workout ahead of me. For the weekend…generally wallowing in lethargy, feeling less than enthusiastic about running and life in general. A couple of these for-real friends s...

Better Days Ahead: 49 Seconds: How Do You Define Success?
http://tristroutertri.blogspot.com/2007/11/49-seconds-how-do-you-define-success.html
Not-so-deep thoughts, observations, and a dash of babbling from a marathoner, sometimes triathlete, and freelance journalist. Tuesday, November 20, 2007. 49 Seconds: How Do You Define Success? I'm not sure who has been looking more forward to the end of this marathon season: me or all the incredibly patient people in my life who have had to put up with me. The pacing might have been less than perfect since June, but it's over.six months later. Did I go out too fast? What mistakes did I make? Dinner was a...

Better Days Ahead: October 2011
http://tristroutertri.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html
Not-so-deep thoughts, observations, and a dash of babbling from a marathoner, sometimes triathlete, and freelance journalist. Tuesday, October 4, 2011. Pardon My Temper Tantrum. It was seven days before the 2010 Chicago Marathon. Words jumped off the screen at me, as he reflected on the nearly flawless training cycle that brought me to that point. How much “fun” it was. How I “nailed” every workout. How I’d been so “tough.”. Truly beyond grateful. But not any less angry, sad, or frustrated.

Better Days Ahead: Dumb Luck
http://tristroutertri.blogspot.com/2008/11/dumb-luck.html
Not-so-deep thoughts, observations, and a dash of babbling from a marathoner, sometimes triathlete, and freelance journalist. Tuesday, November 25, 2008. A couple of days before I left for the Philadelphia Marathon, my mom sent me a card. The outside of it was a black-and-white photo of a little girl, climbing up a rock, with a wide smile as she teetered to gain her balance at the top. It said, “We cannot direct the wind, but we can adjust our sails.”. Who is patiently, intelligently, and positively guid...

Go West (Part V): Into Thin Air. 8220;Too often…I would hear men boast of the miles covered that day, rarely of what they had seen.”. 8211;Louis L’Amour. I wasn’t even 10 years old, in the back of a white rental car my father was driving somewhere toward Park City, UT, my face practically glued to the window. 8220;Dad, are we.
