What if our parents had been undernourished villagers in Uttar Pradesh, and we faced the problem of commanding the attention of the world on a diet of 500 calories a day and in Urdu? I had a fantastic birthday last weekend. I got a leather bag that I had ordered from Abdou, I went SWIMMING (twice! The kick-off of the vaccinat...

What Am I Doing? Life moves at a slower pace here, with a long break after lunch when nothing’s open and no one’s at work. This gives me plenty of time to read, as evidenced by the list of what I’ve read thus far in my 6 months in Senegal (for a while I was averaging 1 book/week but have since slowed down):. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The Girl Who Played with Fire. The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest. Imperial Life in the Emerald City. Cutting for Stone,.

What Am I Doing? Jerejef, Serigne Touba. February 11, 2012. I finally asked someone, what are all these patches of wet ground? As it turned out, the serigne in Tivaouane, the sort of pope to all Tidianes in Senegal, had told everyone to throw 7 buckets of water on the ground in front of their house, as a way of thanking the soil for all it gives them. So they did. (Except for my family. We managed 3 before losing focus.). This slideshow requires JavaScript. An entire country’s public transportation...

What Am I Doing? February 1, 2012. A few weeks ago, I had a meltdown somewhat more serious than my almost-daily mini-meltdowns. What am I doing here? Small enterprise development volunteers typically have a harder time starting projects due to the open-ended nature of the program: whereas agroforestry volunteers spend their days planting trees and agriculture volunteers in the gardens, the work of SED volunteers varies widely based off the needs of each community. Gonna take some time to do the things we never have. Posted by Elizabeth Loftus. Asymp; Leave a comment. Dear Friends and Family,. Yesterday, I found out that Boko Haram has hit very close to home. Three weeks ago, militants entered Magdeme. They looted compounds and, when they reached Goni’s home, they demanded his money and his family. When he refused, telling the men that Boko Haram was not Islam, they shot him. Thank God, the assailants left without taking anyone with them. Posted by Elizabeth Loftus.

I’ve been dreading this conversation even more than the one we already had about the birds and the bees.
