The one that clung closely to during that first year was Don’t tell them anything personal about yourself. They’ll use it against you. I was young, living with my boyfriend, smoked, drank, and did many things that my students should not have known about me. However, by being as guarded about my personal life as I was, I closed myself off to students and was not accessible to them.
