Current NF and RO design. By applying less elements in series, hydraulic losses can be significantly decreased when spiral wound nanofiltration and ultra low pressure RO membranes are used. Calculations indicate that a saving of approximately 20% of the membrane surface can be obtained, with the same energy consumption (feed pressure). Since 1999, several full scale plants are succesfully in operation, applying 3 elements per pressure vessel in series and working at 80% recovery with a staging 2:1.

Pressure vessels were not used in this plant, but the technology is the same. The plant operates since April 1999 succesfully under the following design:. 3 membrane elements in series in both stages: 3 m (8 inch) pressure vessels, 6 vessels in the first stage and 2 vessels in the second stage.
