Current NF and RO design. By applying less elements in series, hydraulic losses can be significantly decreased when spiral wound nanofiltration and ultra low pressure RO membranes are used. Calculations indicate that a saving of approximately 20% of the membrane surface can be obtained, with the same energy consumption (feed pressure). Since 1999, several full scale plants are succesfully in operation, applying 3 elements per pressure vessel in series and working at 80% recovery with a staging 2:1.

Current NF and RO design. For a poultry slaughtery firm, Vitens realised the first hydraulically optimised ultra low pressure NF/RO plant with a capacity of 20 m3/h (0.1 MGD). The Optiflux. Pressure vessels were not used in this plant, but the technology is the same. The plant operates since April 1999 succesfully under the following design:. 3 membrane elements in series in both stages: 3 m (8 inch) pressure vessels, 6 vessels in the first stage and 2 vessels in the second stage.

Current NF and RO design. Water treatment plant Schiermonnikoog is located on one of the small Islands in the north of The Netherlands. Vitens realised in 1999 their second hydraulically optimised ULP NF/RO Plant (20 m3h, 0.1 MGD) for supplying drinking water to the 1,000 people living on the Island. The NF/RO plant has two stages and is equiped with 3 m pressure vessels. Since September 1999 the plant operates succesfully at a recovery of 80%.
