Our Man in Abiko: October 2014

http://www.ourmaninabiko.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Our Man in Abiko. Monday, 20 October 2014. Sketching in the front line. Just happened on this Washington Post blog Drawing up the drawdown. By Richard Johnson, a sketch artist who just got back from a stint embedded with US troops in Afghanistan. Forget the latest camera equipment and Pentagon reporting restrictions, all you need is a pencil, a piece of paper and a good eye. A stunning example of how less is more. Labels: Dont mention the war. Saturday, 18 October 2014. Wednesday, 1 October 2014.

Our Man in Abiko: Arriving at the Kesennuma Plaza Hotel

http://www.ourmaninabiko.com/2015/05/arriving-at-kesennuma-plaza-hotel.html

Our Man in Abiko. Tuesday, 26 May 2015. Arriving at the Kesennuma Plaza Hotel. Back on the road, when we go five minutes without seeing another car in either direction of the four-lane expressway. We leave the toll road and join more winding roads. They are free but single lane which means, this far from Tokyo, getting stuck behind white mini-pickups. We have a satellite navigator and are confident our lady of the dashboard who speaks unfailingly polite Japanese will not lead us astray. The route she...

Our Man in Abiko: May 2014

http://www.ourmaninabiko.com/2014_05_01_archive.html

Our Man in Abiko. Friday, 30 May 2014. Japanese history, the right way up. I'm completely the wrong person to review a manga. Well, that was until tonight. Tonight, I finished reading Shigeru Mizuki. Showa, A History of Japan 1926-1939. Read it. It's excellent. Unlike me, you haven't spent half your life deluded that comics are just for kids, have you? Because that would be a terrible mistake. Labels: Books and such. Thursday, 15 May 2014. It is what it is. It is what it is. That’s a favourite sayi...

Our Man in Abiko: March 2015

http://www.ourmaninabiko.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

Our Man in Abiko. Wednesday, 11 March 2015. Shifting from neutral four years after 3/11. It's 3/11 again. Apart from re-tweeting a few news stories and mentioning that it's been four years since the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear meltdown, I don't really have anything to say. But disasters are not something you can be neutral about. Neutrality is tacit acceptance of the status quo, not something Our Man is into. Not that disasters care what Our Man thinks, to be frank. Our Man in Abiko: July 2014

http://www.ourmaninabiko.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Our Man in Abiko. Friday, 11 July 2014. Shigeru Mizuki's art of war. My eldest is going through junior high school in Japan and I was happy to hear she was studying aspects of the Second World War. As far as I can tell from her textbook (and I could well be missing something) those aspects are the Nazis and the Holocaust, and that's about it. So I don't look to Japan's schools to learn much about the war. That's what comic books are for. Labels: Books and such. Saturday, 5 July 2014. The result is a hotc...

ThinkShop: On Robert Graves, Count Belisarius and Lawrence of Arabia

http://www.pauldoolan.com/2010/09/on-robert-graves-count-belisarius-and.html

A selection of articles on history, politics, art and literature. Thursday, September 9, 2010. On Robert Graves, Count Belisarius and Lawrence of Arabia. In the historical novel,. Was first published Graves was confronted with numerous negative reviews. Most criticised the novel for its stiff portrayal of the main character, finding him to be "altogether too noble". Graves, never a lover of critics, reacted strongly. In one of two letters which he wrote to. T E Lawrence, better known as Lawrence of Arabia.

Great North Run September 2010: September 2010

http://dongnr.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html

Great North Run September 2010. Thursday, 23 September 2010. Great North Run update. I think it's fair to say that my legs have been pretty sore for the last few days. They are okay while I am up and about but stiff after sitting behind a desk at work all day. So that's that, thanks very much for taking the time to read this blog. Intermittent service will be resumed at the following link shortly: http:/ donran.wordpress.com/. Tuesday, 21 September 2010. Having scoffed a large portion of spaghetti bologn...

Great North Run September 2010. Tuesday, 29 June 2010. Tonight was the Jogscotland 5k. In Inverleith Park and the Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh. Reading about the event beforehand, most people who had done the race before suggested getting there early since it often gets busy at the registration tent in the buildup to the race. I didn't really want to travel through to the event in my running gear so I was surprised/disappointed to find that Inverleith Park was somewhat lacking in adjacent bushes/trees to g...

http://dongnr.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html

Great North Run September 2010. Saturday, 31 July 2010. Too far, too fast. Saturday is the shortest, but also my least favourite run of the week. For a change I thought it would be a good idea to do the normal 2.6 mile route, in lieu of a 10 minute easy run, but take it slow because of the longer 40 minute run scheduled for tomorrow. Tell a slightly different story with the first mile at 8m 23s, second at 8m 22s and third at 8m 27s pace, so the session was fairly quick and steady throughout. The time is ...

http://dongnr.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html

Great North Run September 2010. Tuesday, 31 August 2010. The answer to the conundrum posed on Sunday was 'yes'. My legs were very sore on Monday morning. It wasn't a scientific test but the stiffness was probably caused by the absence of any cycling on Sunday afternoon/evening. Chalk up another lesson learned which I'll try not to let happen again during my preparations for the Great North Run. Fingers crossed my legs will be feeling okay tomorrow. Training schedule: 10/20 min easy run. It's fair to say ...

Monday, August 12, 2013. Raising a Bilingual Child: Code Switching. Code Switching - Up close and personal. I have to admit that watching my son’s language development is absolutely amazing. I grew up in “one language” household. My family used English. Now, my family in Japan uses both English in the house and outside as well. In linguistics, code switching is switching between two or more language varieties, in the context of a single conversation. You can follow me on Twitter: @jlandkev. I also found ...

Have you ever wanted to do something so cool that you could look back on it for years and years and be proud you did it? Have you ever wanted to do something so “off the wall” that would be able to amaze people with the tales for years to come? All the best | The best of Our Man in Abiko

On July 1, 2011. The earthquake changed me. Sure, I still write under a ridiculous pseudonym, but the earthquake has profoundly affected me liberated me, even. It is my Year Zero. The significance of March 11 is the fundamental questions it asks of all of us. The first for me is: What right do I have to claim to be so changed by a disaster that didn’t take any of my own flesh and blood? The primary and never-ending question the earthquake asks of all who have felt it is instinctive: Fight or flight?
