A Swimmer in the Fount

A Swimmer in the Fount. Thursday, July 30, 2015. Very Late Reflections on the Opening of the PW Churchwide Gathering. Very Late. Here, partly my August newsletter article, partly reflections coming from last Sunday's worship. One Body, One Spirit. For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.

A Swimmer in the Fount: Top Ten Reasons to Let Him Live

http://www.swimmerinthefount.blogspot.com/2015/05/top-ten-reasons-to-let-him-live.html

A Swimmer in the Fount. Saturday, May 16, 2015. Top Ten Reasons to Let Him Live. 10 Because it costs more to put a person to death than it does to imprison them for life. 9 Because your religion demands it (if you are a Baptist. And because it is consistent with your beliefs (if you are Buddhist. And because it is suggested by Torah and Talmud (if you practice Orthodox. 7 Because, as a bright young college student recently pointed out, killing begets killing. 2 Because, since the above fact is well-known...

A Swimmer in the Fount: There's a Woman in the Pulpit: It's All About the Call

http://www.swimmerinthefount.blogspot.com/2015/04/theres-woman-in-pulpit-its-all-about.html

A Swimmer in the Fount. Tuesday, April 28, 2015. There's a Woman in the Pulpit: It's All About the Call. It was the summer of 2006. My mother had died about six months earlier, and my son was about to head off to college. My daughter was ready to begin her last year of middle school, and I? I didn't have a job. A Call. I mean, I didn't have a call. Ministers don't have jobs, we have calls. But who is a minister without. But there was nothing. Nada. Zip. Scratch. If it be your will. That I speak no more.

Don't kill! Who could object to the Ten Commandments? Honor thy father and mother! All foundations of any civilized society, surely? 9 What I wear in your presence. 8 Writing "Jesus is always the answer" on your trigonometry exam. That's just funny.). You are fre...

A Swimmer in the Fount: Green Rice

http://www.swimmerinthefount.blogspot.com/2015/04/green-rice.html

A Swimmer in the Fount. Friday, April 24, 2015. We had a potluck at church the other night, and a presentation from a guest from far-off land, a lovely gentleman who has more knowledge and insight about boots-on-the-ground disciple-building in his little finger than I have in my whole self. Some of us had already met him, and experienced his quiet and powerful presence at our bible study. The note was signed, "Fondly, M .". I'd never seen anyone sign a note like that. We were so out of our element. I...

http://www.swimmerinthefount.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html

A Swimmer in the Fount. Wednesday, June 17, 2015. Blogging the Presbyterian Women Churchwide Gathering: Day 0. I warned everyone who would listen: I'm going to need to be asleep early, I said, so no calls after 9:00. I have to get up at THREE AM! But you know how it goes. Session meeting (GREAT meeting! Until 8:36-ish, a quick (read: one hour) stop to say goodbye to my Boo, another quick stop to pick up a late dinner. And I still had to pack. And I do NOT like to be rushed. Have I mentioned that? Gratefu...

A supportive community for clergywomen since 2005. August 12, 2015. Some of my regular reads have produced some great posts recently:. Have you ever attended a preaching workshop focused on one specific topic? Spent a week this summer at a practicum for preaching one version of the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises. Also on the Ignatian trajectory,. Continues his postings on his retreat at the Wernersville (PA) Jesuit Center, with a reflection on imagination. If I could plagiarize hers about goodness. The Pastoral Is Political: Parenthood Is not Punishment | RevGalBlogPals

https://revgalblogpals.org/2015/05/11/the-pastoral-is-political-parenthood-is-not-punishment

A supportive community for clergywomen since 2005. The Pastoral Is Political: Parenthood Is not Punishment. May 11, 2015. I saw it again today: the argument that birth control is a way for women to have sex without consequence; that somehow single motherhood is the punishment for having a sexual relationship before marriage. Let us tease that apart a bit. Photo: Michal Zacharzewski / RGBstock. Yet somehow there is a recurring concept that women are trying to have sex without consequence – without p...

http://fragmentsofgrace2.blogspot.com/2016_06_25_archive.html

Fragments of Grace 2. Saturday, June 25, 2016. My Fantasy Life with a Mother. My personal experience, which I do not claim to be a universal one, was that after my mother died when she was 28 and I was seven, life went on, and I came to accept the new normal fairly quickly. What an astonishing thought! How had I missed that idea? I would have grown up in Florida, to which my parents were trying to move from Ohio. I would have grown up TWO BLOCKS FROM THE BEACH, where they had built a house. I would have ...

Fragments of Grace 2. Thursday, July 7, 2016. Falling Out of Time A Stunning Chronicle of Parental Grief (Book Review). From the first page, I knew that this is a book in a category of its own. No . . . from the title, which I saw when I stumbled across it in a bookstore last week: I immediately guessed the topic, as we who have lost our children are the ones who speak of having fallen out of time. Lament for a Son. At first, the narative/poem/song/lament reminded me of Thornton Wilder's. I cannot recomm...

Fragments of Grace 2. Friday, April 29, 2016. I am pondering, these days, the next fifteen years of my life. Surrounded as I am by friends whose parents are requiring a great deal of attention and care, with a mother-in-law and father each having surgery in the next few weeks, and with not a few health problems of my own, I am well aware that, by the time I am 80 (in only seventeen short years! I will likely be much more limited in my capabilities and choices than I am now. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

What requirements do you have of this room? Sure, you can answer “bathroom,” but we can stipulate that as a reasonable assumption and you can pick the second most important room). 2 What is the least important room in your home? The one you use the least, or are not very picky about? My friends of 30 years are here. 4 If your ...

Fragments of Grace 2. Sunday, July 10, 2016. Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:38-42). I had another sermon planned and prepared. I had a plan. And then I read an essay by a friend whose white stepson is a law enforcement officer in Florida, and about how she recognizes the risks of his life, and the lives of...

Swimmer In Transition

Sunday, August 2, 2015. Pendleton and a Spark. Yesterday Kyle and I raced the Camp Pendleton sprint triathlon. 500m swim, 18 mile bike, 5k run. A fun little trip around the LCAC facility against my favorite sailor. They didn't have an elite wave {not that I'm elite, but I like head to head competition}, so I started 30 min behind Kyle. I knew with the shorter swim, we'd be closer in time, but I didn't realize how close. I stood at the swim exit waiting for Kyle. 12 min, 15 min.did I miss him? Honestly, n...
