An intermittent blog on Math Education. September 12, 2016. Tags: algebra 2, desmos, khan academy, precalculus. Dialogue in Math Class. Today began the real work of the year after three half-days last week. We’re at the beginning of a 1-to-1 chromebook initiative, which comes with its own pitfalls and moments of bliss. Last week I had students complete a ‘menu’ for reviewing previous courses. In the past, I’ve had it on paper, where it looks something like this:. I’ll close with that thought today&...

FTC Lesson Brainstorming | being less helpful

https://teachertofer.wordpress.com/2013/08/02/ftc-lesson-brainstorming

An intermittent blog on Math Education. August 2, 2013. 1 Predictions. Let students use what they know to try to predict accumulation based on simple functions. displacement for velocity; water in pool based on rate, et cetera. See if students can come up with some kind of system for accurately approaching an answer. I’d like to add a focus on estimation–that if we know a starting point, and how much something has changed, we’re in good shape to find out pieces of the function. 1 AP Central FTC Focus.

Getting Better | being less helpful

https://teachertofer.wordpress.com/2013/08/01/getting-better

An intermittent blog on Math Education. August 1, 2013. Here are my thoughts: Last year in my calculus class, we focused on the FTC as a means to an end–how can we solve certain problems using the FTC–students did OK in the time we spent on it, but then we moved on. The FTC wasn’t viewed as a thread woven throughout calculus, which it really should be. Let’s brainstorm what that might look like:. 1) I want my students to understand that derivatives and antiderivatives are inverse functions.

An intermittent blog on Math Education. August 3, 2013. MMSI APSI Day 5. Each person completing this for credit gave a brief explanation of a lesson. 1) FTC redesign of Definite Integral Unit. 3) a FTC, working on getting kids to chain rule the upper limit using example we did this week. b. inverse functions working on getting kids to not memorize, but instead derive it each time–easy and not too bad to remember. c. volumes in cross-sections, how do we get kids to keep the pi out? Survival | The Education of Future Math Ninjas

https://theeducationoffuturemathninjas.wordpress.com/2012/08/16/survival

The Education of Future Math Ninjas. At 7:05am Monday morning 25ish 9. Graders will grace me with their presence and will forever be known as My First Class Ever. The nightmares haven’t started yet. You know the ones: students tying up the teacher and dancing on desks. But I’m sure they’ll make their way into my subconscious over the weekend. My goal for the first week of school? Last Friday I was informed I was teaching Informal Geometry and nearly died. I hate Geometry. To top things off, my classroom ...

Hallelujah! Finding two-step function rules from tables | The Education of Future Math Ninjas

https://theeducationoffuturemathninjas.wordpress.com/2012/09/20/hallelujah-finding-two-step-function-rules-from-tables

The Education of Future Math Ninjas. Finding two-step function rules from tables. Maybe this method that I discovered from an exhaustive internet search is well-known to most, but maybe it’s not. So, I decided to post it just in case. That and, quite frankly, I am so freaking excited about it and my husband will have NO idea what I’m talking about if I decide to spew it all over him! What prompted my diehard search for an easier way of finding function rules? Take, for instance, the below table. Notice t...

If only… | The Education of Future Math Ninjas

https://theeducationoffuturemathninjas.wordpress.com/2012/08/27/if-only

The Education of Future Math Ninjas. My Hemmingway-esque first day speech was all set and I thought I was ready for the vainglorious teenagers to push through my classroom door. And then I felt the first of several. Many meltdowns come about. How in the world do you get through the first week of school without having at least one. At least I would’ve had some sort of idea as to what to expect when setting up my own classroom for the first time. I also wish someone would have told me that I would feel lik...

Toys in Math Class?! | The Education of Future Math Ninjas

https://theeducationoffuturemathninjas.wordpress.com/2012/08/09/toys-in-math-class

The Education of Future Math Ninjas. Toys in Math Class? I was student teaching in an Intensive Algebra I class and was trying to think of a hands-on activity to reinforce the concept of the unions and intersections of sets. It dawned on me that ANYTHING could make up a set, so I wandered into my favorite place- the dollar store! I displayed different sets, asked different questions and had the groups use the. I guess they are just TOO fun! Union and intersection of sets. August 22, 2012 at 7:24 PM.

Homework Conundrum Solution | The Education of Future Math Ninjas

https://theeducationoffuturemathninjas.wordpress.com/2012/09/03/homework-conundrum-solution

The Education of Future Math Ninjas. OK, so I am SO done with collecting/grading for completeness homework and I’ve only finished the second week. After some soul-searching and cues from some model veteran teachers, I spent a good part of my long weekend developing an easier-on-my-sanity approach to homework, classwork and rewards. I stole. Compiled various ideas from teachers and developed something that I hope. Think I can live with. So, here it goes. My two-week-old homework system:. I’m planning on a...

https://theeducationoffuturemathninjas.wordpress.com/2012/10/01/non-teaching-related-stress-compounding-new-teacher-stress-grrr

The Education of Future Math Ninjas. Non-teaching related stress compounding new teacher stress Grrr! But I can’t wait until this ordeal is settled before I get my classroom is in order because I am sure to lose my mind by the end of the week. Any advice you wonderful teachers have on dealing with personal stress when trying to teach would be greatly appreciated. As would any advice on how to deal with nearly entire classroom full of talkers. I’m feeling like throwing in the towel. 😦. When things get ba...

Teacher to Learner | Looking at language learning from the other side of the classroom

Looking at language learning from the other side of the classroom. Dear oh dear. I believe this is what the young ‘uns might refer to as an ‘epic fail’ – over a year without posting, and zero Malay learnt. Quite a lot of it forgotten, in fact, so if anything I’ve gone backwards. Not what I set out to achieve at all. I’m all for growth… Read More Oops…. July 25, 2015. July 25, 2015. Shall I say it again? May 8, 2014. March 2, 2014.
