I got a 1st in Sleeping…(week 8) | psu945

https://psu945.wordpress.com/2011/03/18/i-got-a-1st-in-sleeping

Just another WordPress.com site. I got a 1st in Sleeping…(week 8). Virtually the equivalent of flying to New York each weekend. It interested me that the only research cited or used was research carried out by the charity, where no statistics or figures were stated. An example of this is their statement that “. Sleep time for teenagers around the world has steadily decreased over the past 10 to 20 years. And maybe for the students to have direct examples of how lack of sleep can affect them? With the gov...

Back to life, back to…metacognition? (Week 6) | psu945

https://psu945.wordpress.com/2011/03/07/back-to-life-back-to-metacognition-week-6

Just another WordPress.com site. Back to life, back to…metacognition? I guess my point is, just how far can we stretch metacognition, and how many forms of it are there? In my first speech of the semester I talked about my project and Nietfeld’s (2006). Emily Jolley also had a speech in that first week, and I remember overhearing her talking about metacognition with reference to another of Bjork’s 25 principles. Paper, metcognition is seen as a key process in problem-based learning. In my opinion, the fi...

CABAS – Why not? | psu945

https://psu945.wordpress.com/2011/02/28/cabas-why-not

Just another WordPress.com site. CABAS – Why not? I’m going to blog about my upcoming speech this week, as I’ll probably get confused in it and go off on a tangent so at least there might be some background knowledge and ideas already written down before I talk it in to oblivion. Obviously there has been criticism and objection to this style of teaching, especially in the 70s and 80s. Brophy (1983) was completely against the idea of behaviour analysis being applied in schools and other settings, and ...

Just another WordPress.com site. And so it ends… (Week 11). Over the semester I’ve really enjoyed researching different areas of Education, some more than others! If you’re worried about a subject, you focus on what you do know to make yourself feel better. If children had high metacognitive skill, they would focus on what they don’t know, therefore increasing what they do know, and their awareness, giving temselves more motivation and confidence to do well in school. Teaching history narratively, not episodically, finally! (Week 7) | psu945

https://psu945.wordpress.com/2011/03/14/teaching-history-narratively-not-episodically-finally

Just another WordPress.com site. Teaching history narratively, not episodically, finally! Mackie (1980) talked about a logical criterion of necessity. which infers the context of an event, and aids the student in recalling no only the event, but why it happened. Trabasso and Sperry (1985) studies how learning pairs of events in context meant that a relationship could be built between the two events, and that it meant recall wasn’t restricted to one or the other way. Testing Effect | sianed

https://sianed.wordpress.com/2011/02/22/testing-effect

Science Of Education 2010/2011. February 22, 2011. A multistore model of memory is an explanation to how the memory process works and was explained by Richard Atkinson and Richard Shiffrin in 1968. As most of us are aware by now how this all works, short term memory stores information for short amount of time if not rehearsed it gets lost, when rehearsed it then moves into the long term memory and is stored until we retrieve it. But before any test be put in place, exam techniques should be implemented a...

Science of Learning 2011. My schools better than your school! Lexical and Sublexical approaches to learning – Simplified! Posted by: Pip Doran. On: March 14, 2011. On Monday i listened to Becky Gathercoles speech titled something along the lines of What can we learn from NASA . The basic overview of this was the story of NASA spending millions on a pen that would work in space, when in fact, all they needed was a pencil. So this then linked into, are we overcomplicating education? This meant the teachers...

Education gives you wings. That’ll learn him. On: April 8, 2011. Over the last 11-12 weeks, I’ve felt like a real writer! Most people have to work hard to build up a “readership” but this forum came with a ready-made audience! To have people read your work and feel interested enough to respond with thoughtful comments has been pretty special. I only wish more modules and courses were taught like this. However, what have I learned during this time? Hopefully, these blogs have been intrinsically motivating...

Science of Learning 2011. Discovery learning and PBL →. February 9, 2011 · 12:50 pm. Sam H had a comment on her blog from Aaron. About the extrinsic motivation in learning being grades. I agree with her up to a point. Although Aaron begins to touch on learning (as opposed to passing tests), for too many of you, learning = grades, or learning = exams, or learning = whatever. What about just plain learning? Think about your final year projects. How much have you learned in doing your project? I agree the i...

Well the answer to that is they are not, they have dreams to become actors, doctors, lawyers ect, however there is little evidence to show they are being cast in many media roles. Now advertising is an extremely important aspect to companies and brands, how else would we know about them? It aims to reach out to the public while they’re sat at home watching TV, reading a magazine on the bus or listening to the radio in work. The word ‘public’ includes disabled people! Kim Bayley | Masters Graduate in Clinical Psychology

Masters Graduate in Clinical Psychology. What I have learnt…. April 11, 2011. At the beginning of semester, I was very sceptical and also curious about how this module was going to be successful. I was also a little confused, that a whole module can only be graded and based on BLOGs and BLOGs alone…no exams, no assignments – what was the catch? I would most definitely suggest this module to future third year students and I hope I come across similar teaching techniques in my future within education.

Looking back, again. I have spent so much more time researching education and the issues that are prevalent and it has encouraged me to think outside the box and continue looking in my own time outside of blogging and commenting. Like this blog, the module made me reflect on my own education and what I knew of others educational experience and really made me look at different into topics from different angles. Just another WordPress.com site. Reflective blog time already! This module has really opened my eyes to the benefits, but more importantly, the issues that the UK has within its education system, of which there are LOTS. And for those of you who have read some of my previous blogs, you may have noticed how regularly I refer back to the example of Finland for good education. As a recap, I just wanted to list some points that have helped to make Finland’s Education outstanding, which could be easily copied;.
