The National Curriculum | Science of Education
https://psua4e.wordpress.com/2012/03/08/the-national-curriculum
Just another WordPress.com site. So, What would I change in Education? Metacognition and rehearsal →. Although this idea of reducing variability in the quality of education students receive is beneficial, the UK National Curriculum receives a lot of criticism due to the amount of control that the Government has over the education system. There are 3 main issues;. 3) Government assessments (such as SAT’s) consider student performance and attainment, and are used to rate schools and teachers. This over...

Just another WordPress.com site. Monthly Archives: April 2012. Reflective blog time already! This module has really opened my eyes to the benefits, but more importantly, the issues that the UK has within its education system, of which there are LOTS. And for those of you who have read some of my previous blogs, you may have noticed how regularly I refer back to the example of Finland for good education. Alternative pedagogy approaches are used, teaching does not focus purely on direct instruction, and st...

Just another WordPress.com site. Mandatory retirement and abolished tenure? The National Curriculum →. So, What would I change in Education? In my opinion, many changes are needed to successfully improve the education system in the UK, but within this text I am just going to focus on a few main issues that need to be addressed. And don’t develop students life skills. Ability to self-learn skills, or job skills, all of which are important to be successful after education. And promote intrinsic motivation.
Descriptive Feedback (A grading rant) | Science of Education
https://psua4e.wordpress.com/2012/03/21/descriptive-feedback-a-grading-rant
Just another WordPress.com site. Reflective Blog →. Descriptive Feedback (A grading rant). I know that I for one have already briefly mentioned feedback within my blogs a few times, but this week I wanted to elaborate on this area a bit more, as it is widely believed that feedback is a crucial feature of teaching and learning processes (Gipps, 1995). Descriptive feedback rather than grades or scores leads to the highest improvements in performance (Black and William, 1998; Lipnevich, 2008). Pahler, H....

Zo Lucock's Blog. The Science of Education. Or Gifted and forgotton? Giftedness is a really broad and interesting topic and I found it really hard to limit myself with this one. I thought I’d focus on the problems that gifted children have in the education system from day to day. For the ease of this blog, we will define gifted children as those with an IQ over 3 standard deviations of the mean IQ of 100; the highly gifted to profoundly gifted range (IQ of 145 to 180 ) (Gross, 2000). They often find it h...

Andrew's Science of Education Blog. I feel like i should write something intelligently witty here. A student’s behaviour can have a large impact on not just themselves but also the rest of their class, bad behaviour can distract fellow students and force the teacher to take time out from teaching to try and restore discipline. McDermott, Mordell and Stoltzfus (2001). The previous example was taken from a selection of examples found here. 9 thoughts on “ Behaviour and Learning. March 4, 2012 at 7:43 pm.
Self-Evaluation: A successful tool for learning? | Science of Learning

Self-Evaluation: A successful tool for learning? Asymp; 4 Comments. Self evaluation is something that I’m sure we’re all familiar with after our time in education. It involves using critical analytic skills to judge the quality of your own work. It is easy to see why it is a valued technique that is being promoted in schools and higher education today. This form of evaluation need not be complicated. It can even be as simple as just asking questions to yourself such as what did I learn today? A way in wh...

Andrew's Science of Education Blog. I feel like i should write something intelligently witty here. For the course of this module so far most of my blog posts have been about factors that are not generally considered when thinking about improving education, for the last blog post I’ve decide to change tack and talk about the one thing that has the biggest influence on learning, teachers. Sanders (1999) and Wenglinsky (2000). Showed that statistically a 5% increase in the relative position of a teachers in...

The Potential to Move Forward. Week 6: What would I change in the Education System (UK)? The education system in the UK needs to demolished and rebuilt, not just reformed. We need to approach the way we educate people from a different perspective. Rather than viewing an individual student as an empty vessel, waiting to be filled with knowledge by a teacher, we need to stop and ask whether in doing so, are we providing the students with real world skills they’ll need when they leave education? Just another WordPress.com site. March 23, 2012. Throughout our lives we engage in social interactions regularly and frequently (Clark et al. 1998:ix) language is the key and education is certainly no exception. But language and in particular accents serve so much more than to transfer information back and fourth. They are a form of social identity and set us as belonging to a certain community. Just another WordPress.com site. And so it ends… (Week 11). Over the semester I’ve really enjoyed researching different areas of Education, some more than others! If you’re worried about a subject, you focus on what you do know to make yourself feel better. If children had high metacognitive skill, they would focus on what they don’t know, therefore increasing what they do know, and their awareness, giving temselves more motivation and confidence to do well in school. These schools specialise in teaching ...

Looking back, again. I have spent so much more time researching education and the issues that are prevalent and it has encouraged me to think outside the box and continue looking in my own time outside of blogging and commenting. Like this blog, the module made me reflect on my own education and what I knew of others educational experience and really made me look at different into topics from different angles. Just another WordPress.com site. A Reflective blog. aka The End. Over the past few months, this module has taught me so much. Not only has it taught me lots interesting things about psychology in education, and things you wouldn’t hear in a lecture theatre, it has also made me realise a lot more:. Firstly, its taught me that self directed learning is possible and it really works. its been great to be able to talk about WHAT I want, WHEN I want. Next, that Jesse Martin really is a legend! April 20, 2012 · 9:13 pm. This module was one of the most memorable I have taken part in throughout university. It was a unique method of learning and one that I found highly effective. Another fantastic part of this module was listening to what others found. Admittedly even with popps, I was initially apprehensive about the presentation aspect but as they say, practice makes perfect! Presentation skills are fantastic skills to have and this module was great in developing these. In summary this was a fan...
