The Kim-chi Journal

Sunday, June 10, 2012. Anca and I decided to venture out into Insadong and buy some lovely gifts for friends and family. This is the place to go to buy more folky/traditional gifts in Korea. We got a little lost on the way there, but found this beautiful park. Finally, we concluded our magical day of Korean wonder with a stroll down the Chungecheon River. Sometimes the best things are unplanned and stumbled upon. Friday, May 4, 2012. If you're wondering.yes, my job sucks that much. Today was a bad day.

The Kim-chi Journal: November 2011

http://thekimchijournal.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html

Friday, November 4, 2011. Unexpected Kindness Strikes Again. After a long and arduous week (seems most of my weeks have been like this lately) I received an unexpected and nice surprise in the mail. In a plain brown package with my name on it, written in careful English. On the package it said, "Lost Article". Could it be? Oh Korea Korea, still sending me surprises. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). The Kim-chi Journal: Clay to the Extremeeee

http://thekimchijournal.blogspot.com/2012/04/clay-to-extremeeee.html

Saturday, April 21, 2012. Clay to the Extremeeee. Every month we take our kids on field trips. Last month, it was a pajama party. Annnd yes, even though we were supposed to change, I pretty much wore my pajamas all day. Annnnd yes, it WAS magical! This month we went to a clay place. I have no idea what it was called, but it was literally FILLED with clay. You'll see what I mean with the pictures. I love them and I hate them all at the same time.Is that what it's like having children? Jack is a devil baby.

Monday, April 30, 2012. Thanks for all the views you guys! It's always great knowing the support I have, even through something as simple as a page view. As promised here are some pictures of the cherry blossoms! These pictures were taken on my walk to and from work, so I'm pretty lucky to see this everyday. The cherry blossoms are gone now. They only lasted for about a week. They sure were beautiful! April 30, 2012 at 12:15 PM. Your pictures are beautiful! May 4, 2012 at 5:53 AM. Promote Your Page Too.

The Kim-chi Journal: Miles and Smiles

http://thekimchijournal.blogspot.com/2012/04/miles-and-smiles.html

Monday, April 30, 2012. Anca - she gets me. We laugh A LOT! Like the other day we were on the subway (totally oblivious to the lady sleeping next to us, giving us the stink eye) and we were laughing over this book called S* t My Dad Says. If you haven't read it, you should. It's a quick enjoyable book, guaranteed to make you laugh out loud. Anyways, the lady got mad at us for keeping her awake and went to find a new seat. Koreans like their quiet - especially on the subway. Click me: Miles and Smiles.

Adventures in the 4077th. Wednesday, February 5, 2014. Someone shared this photo in the Uijeongbu Crew Facebook group (which I can never bring myself to leave, ever):. Main street Uijeongbu, 1966. Googling to find the original online (in case the Facebook image link ever breaks), I came across this page. It's mind-blowing how much Uijeongbu changed in nearly 50 years and how quickly. Adventures in the 4077th. Sunday, April 14, 2013. Gentleman, Or: PSY Trolls Everyone. The video for PSY's new single is hilarious, and the song is damn catchy. It definitely made me a bit homesick for the sketchy bar districts in Seoul, even if I have decided I'm officially too old for that shit. For those of you who want the Korean lyrics to this new earworm, here they are (courtesy of jumpersjump. We Like We We We Like Party. You so freakin sexy! Ah Ah Ah Ah I’m a…. Ah Ah Ah Ah I’m a…. http://kobarea.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html

Adventures in the 4077th. Thursday, October 25, 2012. My job ends on Halloween, as I might have mentioned before. But I don't leave Korea until November 30th; I'm giving myself a month of free time in the Land of the Morning Calm to chill out, see the sights, and just generally be a lazy bum in a country where liquor runs about $1 US a bottle. So far my plans include going to Gwangju, Jeonju (bibimbap! Only, pretend that it says "goodbye" and not "goddbye.". I like to imagine a future where all of my awe...

Adventures in the 4077th. Sunday, September 1, 2013. Rep Lee Seok-ki (UPP) to be arrested for conspiracy, treason. Parliament to handle arrest request for Rep. Lee Seok-ki next week. I haven't seen this story surface in any of the blogs I still read or in any news; I guess because Syria is the big international story at the moment. Adventures in the 4077th. Tuesday, October 8, 2013. The Queen's Classroom: The Only K-Drama Worth Watching. Okay, maybe not entirely true, but never before has television moved me to tears. To tears! 1 The kid actors actually look like real people instead of Botox'd and plastic surgery'd automatons. 2 The kid actors also aren't awful and awkward in their acting (but maybe I couldn't tell because I was too busy reading subtitles). 4 Satisfying character arcs for everyone, kids as well as adults. Adventures in the 4077th. Wednesday, December 5, 2012. For posterity, allow me to document my experience with the Uijeongbu Pension Office. Accept from me. Uh, what? She also refused to just let me cash it out; I could either wire it home, wire it to a Korean account, or set up a new bank account in the bank downstairs and transfer it there. So I just sucked it up, went to the bank to send my money home, and came back with the bank receipt, and it was all good. Receipt from a wire transfer at your bank w...

Eating our way through Koreatown. We aren’t entirely sure what it’s all about, but we spotted the Kimchi Bus. These rules are killing us! We were seriously hankering for some kimchi, so we headed off to dinner only to realize that the next stop on our never-ending-at-this-pace trip was the White Brick Kitchen. AJ opted for the Mac and Cheese. What can we say? It came with tomatoes and was huge. It also came with croutons and bread, so if you are on the Atkins diet, avoid this item! June Garden – with one of my little helpers. Aside from eating the lettuce (before it bolted), cucumbers and tomatoes raw in salads, I have tried a couple of recipes with my harvest.
