Six: My Bigger Picture. March 2, 2012 at 11:19 pm ( Uncategorized. I don’t feel like I understand the big picture of Education yet- if that’s possible. This week, being the ‘look on the bright side’ person that I am, I want to get a greater perspective on efficient parts of the state education system and next week I’ll blog about what I would change in the system that we have. So what do our state schools do well for their students? Learning materials are provided, including text books, computers, art an...

Nine: Reducing violent conflict in societies. March 23, 2012 at 11:56 pm ( Uncategorized. It was suggested that I could write about Prison Education this week but I got side-tracked during my research and ended up looking at crime on a much larger scale- war. In this week’s blog I’ll look at the role that education can have in reducing conflict levels, and the efficacy of educational programs. Between the opposing societies is the goal. As a specific example Northern Ireland. 8220; Yet in this formal rev...

Five: It’s clear something needs to be done. February 24, 2012 at 3:37 pm ( Uncategorized. When writing these blogs I take hours collecting information, pasting pages of notes from websites and articles. I then sift through all this information, selecting the relevant parts that contribute to my topic. Forming my blog this way works but is time-consuming. Can I find a more effective way of completing this task? What is clear thinking? What are the benefits of clear thinking? Facts can be chosen based upo...

Blogs on the Science of Education. A Change That Would Allow More Effective Changes. March 2, 2012 in Uncategorized. Over the past 5 weeks, I have been persuaded of the increasing magnitude of change the standard curriculums in the UK could do with. I will introduce a few methods I currently think the educational system could do with standardising as well as direct you to the blogs that have triggered or are related to these conclusions of mine. Reid and Webster-Stratton, 2001. Hence, fundamental skills ...

Is teaching becoming an ‘elitist’ profession? | Forward Potential

https://forwardpotential.wordpress.com/2012/02/23/is-teaching-becoming-an-elitist-profession

The Potential to Move Forward. Is teaching becoming an ‘elitist’ profession? I’ve spoken quite a lot in my last few blogs. About the education system as a whole. I find it difficult focusing in on smaller issues, when, if were up to me, the entire system would be changed. This week (for a change), I’m going to move away from the big picture and focus in on improvements that could be made within the current system. Recently, the quality of teachers has come under review. A 2:2 or higher? Interestingly in ...

Science of Learning 2012. PRP3003 Class Aggregation Site. Spring is here…. Spring is here…. March 21, 2012. And so are this weeks grades. Great job (again). Specifically, Carys. Last blog this week, with comments for marking by the 28th of March. At that point, you should know how well you have done on the module. I think this year has gone great, and the model works (wasn’t just a cohort effect). Thanks for all your great talks, have a great break, and see you 9:00 am on the first day back.

PRP3003 – Blogging about Psychology and Education…. March 23, 2012. The Darker Side of Praise. Praise can come in many forms and can vary in depth. I note here the difference between praise, a positive reaction to a behaviour, and feedback, an opinion given with the intention of modifying behaviour. Although they are often very similar, praise is always positively aimed at someone. Deci, E. 1975. Intrinsic motivation. New York: Plenum. View all posts by psub69 ». Laquo; Previous post. Just another WordPress.com site. Reflective Blog →. Descriptive Feedback (A grading rant). I know that I for one have already briefly mentioned feedback within my blogs a few times, but this week I wanted to elaborate on this area a bit more, as it is widely believed that feedback is a crucial feature of teaching and learning processes (Gipps, 1995). Descriptive feedback rather than grades or scores leads to the highest improvements in performance (Black and William, 1998; Lipnevich, 2008). Pahler, H&#46...

Non educational programming in the classroom: treat or tool? March 16, 2012 at 9:35 pm. This blog was inspired by an episode of the TV show Futurama of all things! Explores the benefits of using feature films in EFL classrooms. It is claimed that they will promote engagement and interest to a greater extent than the generally dry films produced specifically to teach foreign languages. I would not suggest using entertainment based films or programmes for all lessons, or more than a few of them, as their e...

An Exploration of Alternative Texts. Wednesday, March 30, 2011. A Vampiric Exploration of Alternative Texts. In case you haven’t noticed, there seems to be a trend in the adolescent subculture regarding the undead. More specifically, vampires have penetrated popular culture to the point of saturation - Twilight, Vampire Diaries, True Blood, etc. The question I want to pose is why vampires and why now? So what does this all have to do with Carr’s article? 148, 56 – 63. Stoker, Bram. (1896). Dracula. This ...
